– Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior was subjected to racist insults from Benfica player Gianluca Prestiani in the match between the two teams in the Champions League round of 16.
Benfica coach José Mourinho responded to a question about whether Prestiani regretted what he said to Vinicius:
Regret what? Listen, I spoke to both of them. Vinicius tells me one thing, and Prestiani tells me another.
“I don’t want to be biased, and I don’t want to say that I believe Prestiani 100%, but I can’t say that what Vinicius told me is the truth, I can’t. I don’t know, all I know is that until the moment the goal was scored, it was a great match, a really great match, with Benfica starting strongly, then Real Madrid coming out with a very strong team and turning the game around in the 30-35th minute.”
“Vinicius scored a goal that only he or Mbappé could score, and he was supposed to carry his teammates on his shoulders instead of angering 60,000 spectators in this stadium. That’s all there is to it.”
