– The Spanish Football League (La Liga) has issued an official statement clarifying its position on the decision issued by the sole judge of professional competitions in the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), which concerns the organisation of Spanish league competitions.
La Liga confirmed that this decision deviates from the legal framework in force regarding the organisation of professional competitions, noting that the Spanish Federation itself, in addition to its legal services, has accepted the legal framework in force.
La Liga said that the law gives it exclusive jurisdiction to determine and modify the date and time of matches within the competition it organises, and that this jurisdiction includes any decision related to scheduling, including the suspension of matches, as it is an essential part of the organisation of the championship, and the Spanish Federation does not have the power to review or modify these decisions.
The statement added that the suspension of the match between Rayo Vallecano and Real Oviedo was part of La Liga’s exercise of its powers as the organiser of the competition, after receiving a technical report confirming that the pitch did not meet the appropriate conditions for the match to be held, with the aim of preserving the physical safety of all players and participants. The statement noted that a new date for the match had been set after La Liga heard from both clubs.
La Liga confirmed that such measures – suspending matches and setting new dates – are routinely taken within the professional competition and with the approval of the Spanish Football Federation, which was ignored in the current sole judge’s decision. The association therefore announced that it would appeal the decision, with full confidence that the appeal would be accepted and the decision overturned.
The statement concluded by emphasising La Liga’s full commitment to the integrity of the competition and the safety of all participants, stressing that it will continue to exercise the powers granted to it by law in defence of Spanish professional football and to ensure the stability and organisation of the championship.
